Field Notes

Every home tells a story. These Field Notes give a closer look at the work behind this project.

Excuse our dust Site is under live construction

This aluminum sided ranch had aging exterior materials and a few developing issues. The siding was outdated, several deck posts showed signs of rot, and the caulk around windows and doors had failed in multiple areas. The homeowners also had concerns about insulation performance and recurring ice damming. This photo captures the starting point before any work began.

The Unfortunate Discovery

Once the siding was removed, it became clear that the home had no exterior vapor barrier or tar paper in place. Moisture had been trapped behind the aluminum for years, wicking into the sheathing and causing extensive rot on the home. The worst parts where beneath the windows, likely the result of long‑failed caulking.

New Sheathing & Insulation

Nearly twenty sheets of plywood required replacement, along with much of the compromised insulation. In several areas, the original sheathing had deteriorated to the point of being paper‑thin and crumbling by touch, contributing significantly to the home’s heat‑loss issues.
